Field note / product design

A LINE ON METAL
IS NOT A DIAGNOSIS.

Why our inspection record separates what is visible, what might explain it, and what someone is authorized to do.

Start with the visible

A photograph can support “a dark line is visible near the flange edge.” It cannot, by itself, establish crack depth, material history or whether a component meets its specification.

Keep inference conditional

A visual-language model might suggest several explanations for the same line. Lighting, residue, a machining mark and a defect may be difficult to distinguish. The product should preserve this ambiguity rather than converting fluent language into false certainty.

Make the missing evidence actionable

“Request a second angle with a scale reference” is more useful than an unsupported pass/fail verdict. Review records should expose what another person needs to resolve the question.

Authority is a separate field

A proposed observation is not an instruction to replace a part or halt production. Qualified personnel and established procedures govern those actions. Our browser prototype demonstrates the handoff, not validated automated inspection.
